AcqData

The AcqData object is used when creating Improved Inter-Range Vector (IIRV) and Extended Precision Vector (EPV) messages using the Spacecraft.IIRV(AcqData1) or Spacecraft.EPV(AcqData1) methods. The AcqData object contains various information used to build this string message, including the type of vector and the reference coordinate system, which is combined with the Spacecraft state vector (position and velocity) at a given epoch, as well as additional spacecraft properties. The IIRV and EPV formats are specified by the “Tracking and Acquisition Handbook for the Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network”, October 1994.
To report the IIRV or EPV to an output file, the “as Binary” and “without linefeed” options should be used, in order to ensure properly formatted line endings. For example:

The Array object contains a one-dimensional set of numbers. An Array with N elements is indexed by n = 0,1,2...N-1. The number of elements in an Array can be set when the Array is created using square brackets. The length of the Array can be changed after the Array is first created. Array elements are accessed using square brackets. See the Matrix, Array, and Variable Math Script Reference for more information. This example shows how to create an array with three elements and assign the first element a value of five:

The Bulirsch Stoer propagator is a self-starting single step method that is designed to take very large steps compared to the Runge-Kutta propagators at comparable accuracy. See expanded description.
Bulirsch Stoer solves the Cartesian formulation of the orbit equations of motion using a Bulirsch-Stoer integrator. It is applicable to ForceModels that are very smooth. This ability makes it ideal for performing orbital decay analysis and lifetime studies. It is not well behaved for short duration perturbations like finite maneuvers and is usually replaced by a Runge-Kutta integrator, which is more suited to those regimes. Since it is a self-starting method, the Bulirsch-Stoer propagator does propagate accurately with impulsive maneuvers because the impulse is applied instantaneously between propagation steps. The implementation in FreeFlyer can be operated in either fixed-step or variable-step modes (see the discussion in Setting up an Integrator) with the better performance typically coming in variable-step mode. The Bulirsch Stoer propagator is described in sections 16.3 and 16.4 of Numerical Recipes in C: The art of scientific computing, 2nd ed. by W. H. Press et al.

Bulirsch Stoer VOP solves the Encke formulation of the orbit equations of motion in equinoctial coordinates using the Bulirsch Stoer integrator. The Bulirsch Stoer VOP propagator is based on a Variation of Parameters (VOP) formulation of the equations of motion. See expanded description.
In this formulation, the equations of motion are not expressed in Cartesian coordinates. Rather, they are in a special equinoctial element set (see A.C. Long, W.D. McClain, and P.J. Cefola, Mathematical Specifications for the Earth Satellite Mission Analysis Program (ESMAP), CSC/SD-75/6025) in which the ForceModel is very smooth. The resulting system of equations is then solved numerically using the Bulirsch Stoer method. The Variations of Parameters (VOP) formulation results in an equinoctial form of the equations of motion with a smooth slowly-varying ForceModel. This implementation is ideal for solution via the Bulirsch Stoer propagator, which takes larger steps sizes for the same accuracy level. Faster performance is possible at the expense of sparser data (since the StepSize is larger). Thus the Bulirsch Stoer VOP formulation is best suited for lifetime studies where large StepSizes and sparse data are desirable. Better performance can be obtained when the propagator is run in variable-step mode but the data produced is not obtainable at a constant interval.

Cowell
|
The Cowell propagator uses a 10th order Störmer-Cowell predictor with an Adams-Bashforth-Moulton corrector propagator. This propagator uses past integrated Spacecraft states to predict and then correct the next orbital state. See expanded description.
Cowell solves the Cartesian formulation of the orbit equations of motion using a multi-step predictor-corrector integrator. The multi-step integrator uses the summed ordinate formulation. The Cowell propagator is the standard integrator in NASA Goddard Space Flight Centers GTDS program, and is included in FreeFlyer to allow consistency between the two tools in operational settings. While the Cowell is generally faster than the Runge Kutta methods, it is not as robust, requiring a very smooth ForceModel, therefore it is not recommended for use with either impulsive or finite maneuvers.
The Cowell integrator's error control, as implemented in FreeFlyer, functions similarly to a variable step Runge Kutta method, in that if the local integration error is low enough, the step size of the predictor corrector method is increased, and vice versa. Unlike a Runge Kutta, the step is not adjusted smoothly. The step size is always increased by doubling, or decreased by halving, whereas for a Runge Kutta method, an estimate of the correct factor to increase or decrease by in order to obtain the desired error is computed. This difference means that the targeter can might have more issues with error control using Cowell since the integration is a relatively un-smooth function.

Norad

The Norad Propagator implemented in FreeFlyer utilizes the SGP4 and SDP4 discussed in the "Methods for Propagation of NORAD Element Sets" by Felix R. Hoots and Ronald L. Roehrich, December 1980, compiled by TS Kelso December 31, 1988. See expanded description.
The Norad propagator, for use with NORAD two-line elements (TLEs), evolves the orbit equations of motion using a Brower theory implemented as a combination of SGP4 and SDP4 algorithms. For Spacecraft with periods less than 225 minutes, the method used is the SGP4 algorithm. Spacecraft with periods greater than 225 minutes are propagated with the SDP4 algorithm. As emphasized by Hoots, the most important point in propagating space objects given their NORAD two-line element (TLE) sets is to note that not any prediction model will suffice. This is because the NORAD element sets are "mean" values obtained by removing periodic variations in a particular way. Good predictions are only obtained if the element set is used with the NORAD algorithm that removed these variations. The Norad propagator is included in FreeFlyer to provide the ability to propagate the large number of Spacecraft that are tracked by NORAD by using the published sets of TLE’s. Note: ForceModel settings are ignored for the Norad Propagator. When using the Norad Propagator for near-earth propagation it is necessary to set the BSTAR term of the Norad TLE to the Cd property of the Spacecraft. This is done automatically if importing the spacecraft state from a TLE file.

The RinexNavFile object provides functionalities for reading and writing Broadcast Ephemeris data to and from a Rinex Navigation file. This is an ASCII file of GPS Broadcast Ephemeris data conforming to the RINEX standard.
RinexNavFiles (also known as GPS Broadcast Ephemerides) contain position, velocity, and clock information for all the satellites of the GPS constellation. FreeFlyer has the ability to read and write RinexNavFiles, but does not generate Broadcast Ephemeris data when propagating spacecraft. The time system is GPS Time, and positions and velocities are in the ECEF reference frame, which FreeFlyer converts into the ICRF frame.

Runge Kutta 4(5) solves the Cartesian formulation of the orbit equations of motion using a Runge-Kutta 4(5) integrator. It controls local relative error by comparing the states produced by each order. The Runge Kutta methods are very robust and are ideal for general orbit propagation and for use with impulsive and finite maneuvers. This method consumes less memory than the other Runge Kutta integrators, at the cost of more propagation steps for a specified accuracy. The Runge Kutta 7(8) VOP propagator is a method for propagating a Spacecraft's orbit that is based on a Variation of Parameters (VOP) formulation of the equations of motion. See expanded description.
Runge Kutta 7(8) VOP solves the Encke formulation of the orbit equations of motion in equinoctial coordinates using the RK78 integrator. In this formulation, the equations of motion are not expressed in Cartesian coordinates. Rather, they are in a special equinoctial element set (see A. C. Long, W. D. McClain, and P. J. Cefola, Mathematical Specifications for the Earth Satellite Mission Analysis Program (ESMAP), CSC/SD-75/6025) in which the ForceModel is very smooth. The resulting system of equations is then solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta 7(8) method. This method is typically used for lifetime studies where constant intervals in the output data are required.

Runge Kutta 8(9) solves the Cartesian formulation of the orbit equations of motion using a Runge-Kutta 8(9) integrator. This method consumes more memory than the other Runge Kutta integrators but takes fewer propagation steps for a specified accuracy. The RK8(9) Propagator is a ninth order embedded Runge-Kutta integrator that maintains eighth order numerical accuracy. This integrator uses Fehlberg-style embedding, with coefficients derived by Verner. Integration with the RK8(9) integrator proceeds through sixteen intermediate stages, accumulating data from each stage and using these data to produce a final, accurate integration step. The RK8(9) Propagator uses the ICRF representation of the orbital elements, expressed in the Cartesian coordinate system (ICRF Cartesian coordinates) to represent the spacecraft’s state for integration. To this state it applies the forces specified in the ForceModel (also expressed in ICRF Cartesian coordinates) in order to determine how to move the spacecraft through time. The RK8(9) Propagator can be run in either fixed-step or variable-step mode. When the propagator is run in variable step mode, the integration step size is controlled by the user-specified error tolerance. Each integration step can have a different step size. This mode allows FreeFlyer to move the spacecraft in time (i.e., propagates the spacecraft) with the largest possible time step consistent with the specified error tolerance. The fixed-step mode ensures that every propagation step moves the spacecraft the same amount of time. FreeFlyer maintains the specified error tolerance for fixed step propagation by keeping the step size at the specified step size when the tolerance would allow a larger time step. If the tolerance forces the time step to be smaller than the specified value, FreeFlyer will take multiple steps internally, and report the results after the accumulated propagation reaches the desired time step.
